I missed the movie I had been planning to see, so instead, I walked around Harvard Square with my camera and tripod taking some photos and I happened to get lucky with the camera in the right place at the right time. One in a million...

Here is a cell phone snapshot of the LCD screen of my "real" Nikon camera showing the photo of the meteor over Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA, at approximately 8:29pm.  I haven't transferred the photo from my camera's memory card yet.

The photo is a single shot captured with a Nikon D300. It is an 8 second tripod exposure using a 20mm prime lens at f8 aperture.

Meteorologist Jim Gamble of ELPALLSKY has examined the original photo...

by Jim Gamble, El Paso AllSky
The photograph appears to be authentic/original. Of particular interest regarding authenticity is the fact that three distinct cloud levels are obvious. The cirroform upper deck is at 15-20K ft, the altocumulus is at 6500 to 15K ft. mid level, and scattered stratocumulus lower clouds are below 6500 ft. The meteor appears to become obscured by the lower deck during ablated flight and does not reappear so termination is not visible.

Eye Witness of bright light in the sky
Hi There,
I found your site searching to see if anyone else saw what I saw this evening. I figure it would be cool to pass on what I saw too.
I live in Somverville MA, and around 8:30PM I saw a bright flash in the sky so I looked up. I saw a bright blue or green object with a long bright red trail behind it that lasted in the sky for about a second. Then a part of the object broke off and seemed to fall and disappear. The rest of the object kept flying through the air until it went out of view. It seemed to be continuing on its path unlike the other part that fell off.
Thanks for having a platform on the internet for people to report what they see in the sky! It was a truly amazing spectacle to see!
Cheers!
Anastasia H.

During descent into LaGuardia Airport this evening a passenger aboard a commercial flight (SWA 3130) observed a "fireball" streaking across the sky. The aircraft was still above the clouds at the time, but had begun descent. (The flight is reported to have landed at 8:43 PM EST on 29 Jan 11.)
Could this have been e.g. the reentry of the upper stage from the recent HII-B launch?

Meteorite sighting 26 Jan 2011
I can confirm the sighting posted 26 Jan 2011. I was crossing the UT campus some time between 10:30-11pm and spotted it East-Northeast of my location.
I remember it being rather large in size and that I could distinctly see that it was starting to break apart into two pieces (even with my poor eyesight). It didn't seem to burn out until it was about 30 degrees from the horizon. It seemed to be traveling almost perpendicular to the horizon (straight down). I was wondering if maybe it was a satellite or large chunk of man-made space junk. From the other readers' comments it seems this thing came down somewhere just North of Huntsville, TX.

Hicksville NY 11:00 pm Meteor? or Lightning? 26JAN2011

Jan 26 Meteor? Hicksville, NY - second event in NY area tonight....  bad lightning? or a meteor?
I`m Justin from Hicksville, NY and I saw the sky light up 3 times bright green and a loud bang at around 11pm.
I have never seen anything like that. It was certainly different. Only the first flash was accompanied by a strange sonic boom like sound though. Not thunder or lighting and no transformers. I've videotaped transformer blows before. Could it be a second piece or part of an earlier meteor? Maybe more than 1?  Do you have any info?

Most likely this event WAS not a meteor. All indications from weather maps and reports indicate lightning from the severe winter storm in the area.

didimae: The Vancouver meteor on Jan.26, 2011 at 17:55pm was more like a fireball and streaked across the sky from SE to NW. It was quite low in the sky and glowed yellow-orange.
One Month ago in the sky SE of Vancouver we also saw the sky light up bright green with a loud bang at around 18:00. At first the bright green expanded rapidly upward and outward like a globe, then reduced quickly down immediately before a glowing blue light lit up that part of the sky.

Info on lights that lit up the sky just now
Im here in my house (elizabeth,nj) and notice my friends on facebook saying its the end of the world and that there were lights in the sky. They say blackout happend and i checked outside and nothing. Later i go upstairs to ask my friend what happend. The wife was on the second floor and was chatting on msn (camera). The friend said what is that? The wife looks outside and sees the sky lit up. The 2 year old child go's to her mom from their bedroom and says "mommy, look up". The husband was in the attic fixing the floor. They both said that it was as if the sky had a light switch. For like 5-10 seconds the sky was "WHITE" then back to normal, then it went back to white then normal. My friends say they saw blue light's in the sky and green lights. One of my friends mom is panicing since she saw the event and her lights whent out. I heard no booming sound whats so ever. I noticed people talking about the event and posted news about 2-5 mins ago (when i looked at the post's). There is lightning and thunder but nothing comes close to what ive heard. ( It's snowing here and there was hail during the event). When i whent putside, all i heard was police, ambulence, and fire truck sirens. I cant beleive i missed this.
